The Witch's Foot
The Witch’s Foot | Hand-Carved Walnut Spoon
There is something rather strange about this little piece of woodwork. At twelve inches long, the spoon has a slender, winding handle, a shallow bowl, and at its opposite end, a small foot carved into the dark walnut.
Made entirely by hand in our woodshed, it takes its character from the old traditions of folk carving, when ordinary household objects were sometimes given unexpected shapes and details. The little foot lends it an almost superstitious quality, as though it might have belonged among the wooden implements of an old country kitchen, where practical work and folklore were seldom very far apart.
The walnut has been left in its natural state, without stain or varnish, and finished only with beeswax and mineral oil. Its dark grain, irregularities, and marks of the carving knife remain part of the piece.
A singular little object for the kitchen, the herbalist’s table, or a collection of handmade folk art.
