Hand Carved Walnut Bone Spoon

There is an old intimacy between the things we make with our hands and the things we leave behind.

Carved from a single piece of walnut in our woodshed, this spoon was fashioned in the likeness of a bone. Its darkened bowl and long, irregular handle bear the marks of patient handwork, each curve shaped slowly to preserve the strange familiarity of its form.

I have always been drawn to the quiet presence of such objects. Those that seem to belong as much to the past as to the present, recalling a time when the implements of daily life were made by hand, kept for years, and eventually passed into the care of another.

A small remembrance of our mortal nature, made for the living.

Materials: Solid walnut, finished with beeswax and mineral oil.

Dimensions:

8“ long

Hand-carved in our California woodshed.
