The Old Washhouse
There was a time when the keeping of a house was a long and laborious affair. Water drawn, linens boiled, hands stained with soap, and the week’s washing hung beneath the sun.
This old aqua glass bottle once held laundry blue, a preparation used to take the yellow from white linens. Manufactured by C. A. Murdock Manufacturing Co. of Kansas City, Missouri, it belongs to an earlier age of domestic life, when even the smallest household necessities came wrapped in beautiful paper labels.
Much of that label has surrendered to time. The paper is worn and broken, its lettering still visible beneath the years. The glass has grown cloudy, bearing the marks of age and handling.
I find something rather moving in objects such as this. Not the fine possessions kept behind glass, but the ordinary things that stood beside washbasins, kitchen sinks, and open windows. Things held by hands whose names have long since disappeared.
An old remnant of the washhouse, preserved for another century.
Condition: Antique condition with substantial wear and losses to the original paper label, surface cloudiness, and signs of age. Original cork inside bottle, Sold as a decorative historical object.
