The Lost Garden
There are gardens that remain long after the house has fallen quiet.
Their flowers live on in old drawings, pressed between the pages of books, or worked into the ordinary objects that once filled a home.
This vintage hammered metal tray carries such a garden upon its surface. Small blossoms and wandering branches have been impressed into the center, surrounded by the uneven marks of hammered metal. Its rectangular shape is plain and practical, with softly rounded corners and a raised border worn smooth by time.
There is something deeply human in the work of making an everyday object beautiful. A little flower upon a serving tray, a bit of ornament brought into the daily labor of keeping house.
I imagine it carrying cups of tea through a quiet kitchen, resting beneath a jar of gathered herbs, or holding the small remains of an afternoon spent writing beside an open window.
Its surface has softened with age, been marked by scratches and the gentle dulling of metal. Nothing about it asks to be restored. It has already lived a life worth keeping.
A lovely piece for the old-fashioned home, for serving, gathering, or giving a resting place to the things we wish to keep near.
