Ritual Spoon
Hand-Carved Black Walnut Ritual Spoon
There is a certain satisfaction in making something useful from a piece of wood, particularly when the work is done slowly, with a few tools and the patience of the hands.
This spoon was carved in the back of our woodshed from solid black walnut. Its long, gently curved handle leads to a deep, rounded bowl, with a small angular detail left where the two meet. The dark grain follows its shape, and the slight irregularities are evidence of the work that went into making it.
No stain or varnish has been applied. The wood has been rubbed only with beeswax and mineral oil, leaving its natural color and grain intact.
I imagine it among the simple instruments of an old apothecary, resting beside jars of dried plants, roots, and fragrant resins. An object made for ordinary work, though ordinary work has always had its rituals.
Made for gathering dried herbs, measuring loose incense, or preparing the small offerings of a personal practice.
Length: 7.5 inches
Material: Solid black walnut
Finish: Beeswax and mineral oil
Origin: Hand-carved in our California woodshed
Care: Wipe clean with a soft cloth. Do not soak.
