There is something about an old door that makes one wonder what was once kept behind it.
This hand made wooden cabinet has been fashioned with the appearance of a salvaged door, its weathered face bearing an aged metal backplate, an ornamental knob, and an empty keyhole. Two dark hinges hold the door against a simple wooden frame, opening to a hollow interior.
The wood is rough and deeply marked, its grain exposed and its edges worn. Nothing about it has been made to look new.
I imagine it hanging in the narrow hallway of an old house, or resting upon a writing desk, keeping the small possessions we gather throughout our lives. A folded letter, a photograph softened by years of handling, a little bundle of sage gathered from the dunes, or flowers cut from the garden and left to dry between the seasons.
There is no telling what a person might choose to keep behind such a door.
And perhaps that is the beauty of it.
